The Blues According To Lightnin' Hopkins
I just scored a 110 track album of Lightnin' Hopkins bangers on iTunes for about £4.00, and started rewatching some clips I found a few years back.
I feel like Lightnin' is really easy to overlook, even to a hardened blues connoisseur, which is a tragedy because he really is one of the all-time greats. A Texas bluesman, he could play it all - terrified, neurotic traditional Delta blues; melodic, upbeat dance numbers and even modern electric rockers.
Yet, everything he touched is distinctively his own - a haunting vocalist, complete guitarist and, without a doubt, a man who lived and breathed the blues.
This clip is from a half-hour 1970 documentary called The Blues Accordin' to Lightnin' Hopkins - it speaks for itself.
